The first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah (also spelled Zil Hajj / Zilhoz) are considered among the most blessed days in Islam. Fasting during these days is highly recommended for those who are not performing Hajj.

Fasting the first 9 days is recommended.
The 9th day is called the Day of Arafah.
Fasting on the Day of Arafah is especially virtuous for non-pilgrims. The Prophet said it expiates sins of the previous and coming year.
The 10th day is Eid al-Adha, and fasting on Eid is prohibited.
